DABC: Translation Funfilled Day 3 Workshop

Mar 4, 2022
2 min read

So it's day 3 of the Dubbing Academy Booth Camp and a lot has to expect to this day.

Kicking off with a funny and humorous vibe that our mentor for the day sir Niel Tolentino had shared with the whole zoom participant, secretariats, and hosts. Sir Neil Ericson Tolentino is known for his work in translations for many, many anime, drama, and movies in the Philippines and abroad.

Learnings for this workshop

The discussion was full of energy the whole time and sir Niel is so dedicated to his time in sharing with us his wisdom from his expertise.

I learned about the difference between ADR - Automated Dialogue Replacement and Dubbing. ADR is used to improve the audio quality of a video while movies and other videos are dubbed such as anime, telenovela, movies, and more.

ADR is used in unintelligible dialogues hence the name dialogue replacement. This varied in many situations e.g. improper throw of lines. Accents, non-verbal sounds - breathing, laughter and etc.

The writer/translator's significant role

There at times that the words should continually deliver even the character is off cam so that the thought will be complete and there is where the writer comes in. The writer will sneak in lines from the ADR or Dubbing Script.

The ADR/Dubbing scriptwriter goes through the entire episode/scene of the material which is either movie, anime, or telenovela, and uses the translation to write adaptive or dialogue that does not only fit with their native audience but also the lip flaps. How to coordinate the lips? Starting and ending point.

The concept of language is a system of conventional, spoken sign, or written symbols as members of a certain group of society. The translation should be according to the character. E.g poor, rich, government, status in life.

Translations should not be literal BUT contextual. Comprehension is the key! Choice of words will pertain to your skill as a writer, not even the library of terms you have in your brain.

A great writer has great comprehension and experience than a library of vocabulary.

Terminologies

Reax's or Reacts - Series of reax are different reactions.

Ellipses - is used for Pauses and not slant slashes because it's appealing thus an eyesore. Be warned! The punctuation mark is not a pause.

ON - Face/lips are seen on cam.

OFF - Face/lips are not seen on cam. E.g. VO, Narrator, extra characters.

To ON - Moving clips from being unseen to seen.

To OFF - Moving clips from being seen to unseen.

Ovlp (Overlap) - an overlapping response or overspread.

Simul - Simultaneously, altogether.

Stretch - add words or deliver the line slowly.

Tighten - Compress or fast delivery of lines.
